Ege'nin Koyları

That dark cavity under the majestic walls of Alanya Castle, the most frightening, mysterious, and legendary spot: Pirates' Cave (Korsanlar Mağarası).

This is the stop where Limancepte.com guests listen to stories the most during Alanya yacht charter tours. Said to be the refuge of pirates, the nightmare of the Mediterranean in the past, this cave hosts only swimmers and curious tourists today.

Here are the facts and legends about this "infamous" cave of the Alanya peninsula:

1. Why is it Called "Pirates"? (Dark Past)

Alanya was the capital of Cilician pirates in ancient times (especially in the Roman period).
Legend: It is said that pirates hid the loot they plundered from the Mediterranean and the girls they kidnapped in this cave. Since the mouth of the cave is wide (10 meters) and high (6 meters), small pirate boats could easily enter here and disappear.

2. The "Secret Tunnel" Rumor to the Castle
The biggest urban legend about this cave is the "Secret Tunnel".
Rumor: According to belief, there was a secret staircase or tunnel leading from inside the cave to the Alanya Castle above. Pirates used to carry loot through this tunnel.
Reality: The physical existence of such a tunnel has not been proven (or it has collapsed). However, cracks in the cave ceiling keep this legend alive.

3. Can You Enter the Cave?

Yes, despite its scary name, this cave is a favorite swimming spot for tourists.
Swimming Experience: Your boat stops in front of the cave. When you jump into the sea and swim inside, the color of the water turns dark navy blue, and the atmosphere becomes dim and cool. The sound of waves hitting the rocks inside makes you feel that old pirate atmosphere.
Small Boats: Large gulets cannot enter, but if you have a small dinghy or canoe, you can paddle deep into the cave.

4. Riot of Colors (Secret of Rocks)

The rocks inside the cave sometimes take on purple, sometimes turquoise colors with the reflection of the sea water. Although not as bright as the Phosphorous Cave, the Pirates' Cave has its own unique, more "heavy and mystical" atmosphere.

Pirates' Cave FAQ

  • Was treasure found?
No. Since it has been a frequent destination for treasure hunters for centuries, there is no (known) treasure left inside.
  • Can you go down from land?
Absolutely not. The cave is under the steep cliffs of the peninsula. Accessible only by sea.
  • Is it dangerous inside?
Generally safe. However, since it is dark, it is recommended not to swim alone and not to get too close to the rocks.
  • Are there bats?
Sometimes seen in deep and dark parts. However, they usually hide due to human density.
