Shipyard Beach (Alanya): Swimming in the Shadow of History

Ege'nin Koyları

One of the rarest spots in the world where you can swim leaning against 800 years of Seljuk history at the foothills of Alanya Castle: Shipyard Bay (Tersane Koyu).

As Limancepte.com, when we tell our guests asking about Alanya yacht charter that "You will see not only nature but also history", this is exactly the place we mean. After the wild beauty of the caves, Shipyard Bay is a noble stop that makes one feel like "swimming at the Sultan's beach".

Here is what you need to know about this historical pool of Alanya:

1. The Seljuk Naval Base

This is not an ordinary bay. It is the front of the first shipyard (shipbuilding workshop) of the Mediterranean, built by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat in 1221.
The View: When you enter the sea, you see that famous 5-arched shipyard structure and the majestic Red Tower in front of you. Swimming in this atmosphere where the walls descend to the sea is like a time travel.

2. Crystal Clarity and Sandy Bottom

Alanya's cave side is generally deep and rocky, but Shipyard Bay is different as it is a shelter.
Sea: Places close to the shore are shallow and sandy, deepening as you go out. The water is so clear that the shadow of the boat hits the bottom.
Waveless: Even if the other side of Alanya is wavy, this place is usually calm like a pool because it is under the protection of the port.

3. Home of Caretta Carettas
Shipyard Bay is the favorite feeding ground of sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) in Alanya.
Snorkel Advice: If you swim here, definitely wear your sea goggles. You are very likely to encounter a Caretta Caretta swimming among the underwater foundations of the historical walls.

4. How to Get to the Bay? (Both Land and Sea)

Unlike other caves of Alanya reached by boat, Shipyard Bay is also accessible by land.

  • By Sea: It is usually the first or last stop of boat tours. Lunch breaks are usually given in this quiet bay.
  • By Land (Walk): You can go down to the bay and the small beach next to it with a pleasant walking path passing by the walls from Alanya port towards the Red Tower.

5. Not a Test of Courage, But a Pleasure Point

Adrenaline activities like high diving done in the caves region are not here. This is more of a place to jump off the boat and enjoy history, watch fish with a snorkel, and take photos at the bottom of the walls.

Shipyard Bay FAQ

  • Is there a beach?
Yes. Right next to the shipyard walls, there is a small, boutique beach known as "Shipyard Beach".
  • Is there an entrance fee?
Entering the bay from the boat or using the beach is free. However, if you want to visit the inside of the Shipyard building (museum part), a Museum Card is required.
  • Is the water cold?
No. It has the general water temperature of Alanya, quite warm.
  • Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Since the sea starts shallow and is waveless, it is the safest swimming break in Alanya boat tours for families with children.
