Kisebuku (Bodrum): Blue Voyage Among Byzantine Ruins

Author: Limancepte Date: 31.01.2026 19:23:06
Ege'nin Koyları

The refuge for those who want to escape from Bodrum's famous nightlife and crowded beaches and swim in the silence of history: Kisebuku.

It is the "Indispensable" first (or last) stop of Blue Cruises departing via Bodrum yacht charter for Limancepte.com guests. The difficulty of land transportation (it has a rough dirt road) has protected this place from mass tourism and entrusted it to sailors.

Here is what you need to know about this historical and green bay of Bodrum:

1. Where Does the Name Come From? "Church Bay"

The original name of the bay comes from the historical structures on its shore.
Etymology: Its original name is "Kilise Bükü" (Church Bay). Over time, it rolled in the public mouth and became "Kisebükü".
History: Ruins of a monastery, church, bath, and cistern from the Byzantine period are found on the shore and in the forest right behind it.

2. Swimming in History

It is one of the few bays in Turkey that hosts such dense historical ruins on its shore. When you jump into the sea from your boat and swim to the shore, centuries-old walls welcome you right where the beach ends. Wandering inside the bath ruins and then returning to the cool waters is the trademark of Kisebuku.

3. Paradise of Oleander Trees

The nature of Kisebuku is slightly different from other bays of Bodrum. The surroundings of the bay and the creek bed are surrounded by pink-flowered Wild Oleander trees. The green of pine trees, the pink of oleanders, and the blue of the sea merge here.

4. The "Gate" of the Blue Cruise

This is a strategic point for weekly tour boats (Gulets) departing from Bodrum harbor. It is usually the first overnight stop for boats sailing to Gokova Bay. The "first silence" after leaving the noise of Bodrum is experienced here.

⚠️ Transportation Warning: Why Sea Route?
The land road to Kisebuku via Mazı village is usually dirt, stony, and rough. It is challenging and uncomfortable for standard passenger cars. For those who do not want to be covered in dust, this is a place visited 90% by sea.

Kisebuku FAQ

  • Is the sea sandy or stony?
The beach and sea entry are generally pebbly. That's why the water is very clear. Sea shoes are recommended for sensitive feet.
  • Are there facilities?
There are no luxury businesses. A shabby place meeting basic needs may be found. This is nature, not a "Beach Club".
  • Is the water cold?
Since it is the beginning of Gokova, the water is a bit cooler and much cleaner than Bodrum center.
  • Can we stay overnight?
It is a perfect shelter for boats. It is quite sheltered against winds. Ideal for stargazing at night.
