Bodrum Orak Island: The "Turkish Maldives" & Neon Turquoise Waters

If there were a "clearest water" contest on the Bodrum peninsula, Aquarium Bay and Orak Island would compete in the final, and Orak Island would usually win.

Named after its sickle-like shape when viewed from the air, this deserted island is the brightest star of Bodrum yacht charter routes. This is not a beach, but an aquarium in the middle of the open sea. When you approach Orak Island, the color of the sea suddenly turns from dark navy blue to a phosphorescent, neon turquoise. This color transition is so sharp that filming this moment on the bow of the boat is a Blue Cruise classic.

Here are the details that make Orak Island so special and the visit guide:

1. Why is the Water Color "Neon Turquoise"?

The secret of Orak Island is in its ground. The bay on the south side of the island is covered with a layer of white sand. When the bright sun of the Mediterranean hits this white ground and reflects back, the color of the water turns into a radiant turquoise.
Visibility: The water is so clear that even if the depth is 10-15 meters, you can clearly see the sand grains and swimming fish at the bottom as if looking through glass.

2. Are There Facilities? Can You Go Ashore?

No. Orak Island is completely deserted. There are no settlements, hotels, restaurants, toilets, or sunbeds on the island. Only olive trees.
Going Ashore: The shores of the island are rocky and steep. There is no ideal beach for swimming. Therefore, boats do not dock at the island, they anchor in the middle of the bay and you enter the sea from the boat.

3. How to Get There? (Sea Only)

Land access to Orak Island is impossible. The only way is the sea.

  • Daily Tour Boats: It is the main stop of large wooden gulets departing from Bodrum Center or Gumbet. It is economical but can be very crowded.
  • Private Boat Rental (Limancepte Recommendation): If you want to take that famous "swimming alone" photo, a private boat is a must. You can turn your route here with a boat you rent from Halikarnas, Torba, or Yaliciftlik.

4. How is the Sea? (Depth and Current)

The places where the boat anchors are usually deep (5 meters and above). Non-swimmers must use life jackets. There is no shallow coastline. The "reef" part where the turquoise area ends and the dark blue depth begins is great for snorkeling.

5. Best Time to Visit (Critical Tip!)

Orak Island can turn into a "floating parking lot" with dozens of tour boats anchoring at the same time during lunch hours (11:30 - 15:30).

Limancepte Captain's Advice If you have rented a private boat, talk to your captain and go here before 11:00 in the morning (before tour boats arrive) or after 16:00 in the evening (when everyone returns). Let the island remain only to you.

Orak Island FAQ

  • Is there an entrance fee?
No, the island is open to the public. There is no entrance fee. You only pay for the boat.
  • Is camping allowed?
Theoretically possible, but practically very difficult. Flat area is limited, no water, and there may be wild boars at night. Not recommended.
  • How long does it take from Bodrum center?
It varies between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on the speed of the boat.
  • Is it suitable for children?
Children love it because the water is clear. However, since the sea is deep, parental supervision is a must. There is no beach to play on the shore.
