Göcek Cleopatra Bath (Hamam) Bay: Swimming Among Sunken Ruins

The most mysterious, historically scented, and legendary stop of the Gocek 12 Islands route: Cleopatra Bath Bay (Sunken Bath).

As Limancepte.com, we always use this sentence when describing this bay to our guests: "Where else in the world can you swim among the ruins of a 2000-year-old royal bath?" This is not just a sea break, it is like visiting an archeology museum underwater.

Here are the notes from the logbooks of our Gocek yacht charter captains and the visit guide about this legendary bay:

1. Where is it and Why is it So Special?

Cleopatra Bath Bay (named "Monastery Bay" on nautical charts) is a paradise disconnected from the outside world in the southwest of Gocek bay, where pine and olive trees descend to the sea.
Feature: Just a few meters from the shore, there are ancient wall ruins and columns half-submerged in water. Legend has it that this was a bath built for Queen Cleopatra during her visit to the Mediterranean and fed by a hot water spring. Swimming among the ruins is a fascinating experience.

2. Is There Land Access?

This place has remained pristine because it is "inaccessible".

  • By Sea (Only Comfortable Way): The most logical way to reach the bay is by boat. It is an indispensable stop for daily tours and private charter boats departing from Gocek or Fethiye.
  • By Land (Difficult Hike): There is no direct vehicle road. It can be reached by walking on a marked but difficult Lycian Way track starting from Sarsala or Kapukargın, which takes about 1-1.5 hours. It is quite tiring in the summer heat.

3. Is Swimming in the Sunken Bath Dangerous?

The area with historical ruins is shallow and the bottom is stony.
Caution: You should be careful not to hit your feet against ancient walls while swimming. Some stones can be mossy and slippery.
Recommendation: We definitely recommend keeping sea shoes with you. This way, you can step on historical columns and safely experience that mystical atmosphere.

4. Facilities, Restaurants, and Camping

  • Restaurant: There are a few shabby but pleasant restaurants on the shore of the bay that also provide pier service. You can eat fresh seafood or Turkish pancakes (Gözleme).
  • Camping: The forest area behind the restaurants is a popular spot where Lycian Way hikers do "Wild Camping".

5. Famous "Fish Painting" and Snorkeling

At the entrance of the bay, a large fish figure painted on the rocks catches your attention. This is also one of the best snorkeling spots in Gocek. You should wear your mask and scan the coastline to see not only the bath ruins but also the amphorae underwater.

Cleopatra Bath Bay FAQ

  • Is there an entrance fee?
There is no fee to come by boat and anchor. If you want to tie up to the restaurant pier, they may ask for a dining fee.
  • Is the water warm?
Although the legendary "hot spring" is not actively felt anymore, the water is warm compared to the Gocek average.
  • Can you walk to the Ancient City of Lydae?
Yes. The path starting from the bay takes you to the Ancient City of Lydae on the hill with a 30-40 minute climb. Sturdy shoes are a must.
  • What is the most crowded time?
Daily tour boats flock here at noon (12:00 - 15:00).
Limancepte Expert Tip If you have rented a private boat, ask your captain to take you here around 09:30 in the morning or after 16:30 in the evening. Let history remain only to you when crowded boats withdraw.
