When Kekova is mentioned, the Sunken City comes to mind first, but its soul is in Kaleköy. Although it is on the mainland, this village, which shows peninsula features due to its geographical structure and has no road access (except for a difficult path from Ucagiz), is the most authentic stop of the Mediterranean.
Here is the unique Simena experience waiting for you when your Kekova boat charter docks at the pier:
As your boat approaches the Kaleköy port, you see that famous Lycian Sarcophagus standing alone in the water on the right side. This sarcophagus is the most concrete proof of how the water level rose with earthquakes in the region and how history remained underwater. This is that iconic frame you often see in Turkey's promotional films. Approaching it by boat and photographing this historical monument rising from the water is the opening ceremony of the tour.
You may get a little tired while climbing up the hill from the village's narrow stone stairs decorated with bougainvillea, but it will be worth it when you reach the top.
Simena Castle is the most strategic point overlooking the Kekova region. The world's smallest amphitheater inside the castle (only 7 rows of seats) shows the boutique structure of Lycia. When you look down from here; Sunken City, Ucagiz, islands, and boats are laid under your feet.
Entry Info: The castle can be visited with a Museum Card.
The unwritten rule of Kaleköy is this: Everyone who comes here eats that ice cream! These ice creams made by the villagers (especially the aunts) with their own hands, consisting of goat milk and real fruits, are a legend. The favorite is definitely the Peach-Almond and Melon-Lemon duo.
Kaleköy port and its surroundings are one of the favorite feeding grounds of Caretta Caretta sea turtles. While your boat is tied at the pier, you are very likely to see a cute Caretta popping its head out of the water around you. Since the water here is clean and rich in nutrients, turtles are accustomed to boats and people.
There are no large hotels in Kaleköy, only a few boutique pensions run by families. When daily tour boats leave the village around 16:00, Kaleköy takes on its real identity. Eating fresh fish and appetizers at the restaurants on the pier in the evening, literally with your feet touching the water, is one of the most romantic experiences.
